An ulcer is a break in the continuity of the skin or membrane. An arterial ulcer occurs due to damage to the artery because of insufficient blood flow through the tissue. A venous ulcer occurs due to damage to the vein because of inadequate return of blood to the heart. Arterial and venous ulcers take a very long time to heal.
